About MDR Rehab

Dedicated to healing lives through compassionate, evidence-based care

Our Story

MDR Rehab was established in 2019 when a group of behavioral health practitioners saw that families across Napa County and the surrounding wine country communities were traveling hours for quality addiction treatment. They resolved to build something closer to home — a facility where rural Californians could access the same caliber of care found in metropolitan centers, without leaving the valley they call home.

In the 7 years since, what began as a modest 12-bed program has grown into a 28-bed campus with 58 staff members and more than 2,900 completed treatment journeys. We have developed programming that reflects the specific realities of Napa Valley life — from vineyard and hospitality workers navigating seasonal pressures to families dealing with generational substance use patterns in tight-knit communities.

Today, under Executive Director Dr. Angela Robinson's guidance, MDR Rehab remains intentionally sized to preserve the personal attention that defines our care. Growth has never been pursued at the expense of the close relationships between staff and patients that make recovery stick.

MDR Rehab founding

Our Mission

MDR Rehab is committed to bringing accessible, clinically rigorous addiction treatment to the people of Napa and the wider North Bay region. We address every dimension of substance use disorder — biological, psychological, social — with programs shaped by empathy, cultural sensitivity, and an unwavering respect for each person's dignity.

Anchored in a rural community built on hard work and mutual support, we harness those same values in recovery. Our patients are not case numbers; they are neighbors, and we invest in their futures the way neighbors do — personally, persistently, and without reservation.

Treatment Philosophy

At MDR Rehab, we recognize addiction as a treatable medical condition that touches every part of a person's life. Our clinical framework is built on three core commitments:

Evidence-Informed Care: Our treatment modalities — including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, motivational interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and medication-assisted treatment — are selected based on peer-reviewed outcomes data and continuously evaluated through internal quality reviews. Whole-Person Wellness: Recovery demands more than addressing the substance alone. We integrate nutritional guidance, physical activity, mindfulness training, and creative expression alongside clinical therapy to strengthen the body, settle the mind, and renew a sense of purpose. Individualized Recovery Plans: Every patient arrives with a distinct history, and every treatment plan reflects that. Our clinical team conducts thorough biopsychosocial assessments to design care pathways that honor personal strengths, family dynamics, cultural background, and long-term goals.

Our Team

Dr. Angela Robinson, PhD, LMFT

Executive Director

Dr. Robinson brings 14 years of behavioral health leadership to MDR Rehab, including extensive work with underserved rural populations across Northern California. She earned her doctorate in marriage and family therapy from Loma Linda University and held supervisory positions at two Bay Area treatment programs before co-founding the clinical model that anchors MDR Rehab. Her research on family systems in wine country communities has informed county-level prevention strategies, and her daily presence on campus ensures that the culture of personal care she champions remains the facility's defining trait.

Dr. Mateo Rivera, MD, MPH

Medical Director

Dr. Rivera completed his medical residency at UC Davis and holds a Master of Public Health with a concentration in community health. Board-certified in addiction medicine, he oversees all medical services at MDR Rehab, from detoxification protocols to ongoing medication management. His public health background gives him a distinctive lens on the social determinants of addiction — including poverty, occupational stress, and limited healthcare access — that are especially relevant in Napa County and the broader North Bay region. He is a trusted voice in Napa County's collaborative health network and an advocate for expanding rural treatment capacity statewide.

Joyce Kim, LCSW, RADT

Clinical Director

Joyce Kim has dedicated a decade of her career to direct clinical work with individuals and families affected by substance use disorder. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Alcohol and Drug Technician, she designed MDR Rehab's group therapy curriculum and its family recovery workshop series. Known for her approachable directness, Joyce creates a therapeutic space where patients feel safe enough to be honest and supported enough to change. Her leadership ensures that every clinician on the team upholds the same standard of compassionate accountability.
